Xmas Card Tutorial

See - this is what you get when I've been away for a wee while....MY VERY FIRST TUTORIAL!!! XMAS CARDS!!! WOOt!!!

*ahem*
Anyhoodle, the instructions are fairly simple.
Step 1 - gather your materials. You will need (most likely) the following items

  • Some cardstock for the main body of the card. I have used red;
  • Some plain coloured cardstock (I've used cream) for stamping on;
  • some more cardstock in a contrasting colour. I have used green;
  • Assorted stamps. I've used a music one and also a mistletoe one, some christmas themed ones and a merry christmas greeting, but use whatever you like or have on hand!
  • Stamp pads - I think mine is an Adirondack one in a browny colour (maybe caramel?)
  • An assortment of patterned, seasonal papers. I had a heap of partly used sheets in my stash. I've used all different, but you could use all the same. Up to you!!;
  • Adhesive - whichever you prefer. I'm using an old Creative Memories strip sticky thingo, because that is what I had on hand!;
  • Assorted tools - paper trimmer, pencil, scallop-edged scissors, eraser, ruler, sponge, eyelets and tool, normal scissors, water colour pencils or markers (if you use watercolour pencils you will also need a small paintbrush and some water) and ribbon or thread if you plan on having eyelets on your cards etc;
  • and some scrap paper for masking, and I like to use some scrap paper to lean on when I stamp.
(you will note that my picture also includes some gel pens. I confess that I did not use these...also pictured is my scrubby stamp cleaner and a tatty old face washer to clean my stamps with.)

Step 2 - mark out the size of your finished base card onto the cardstock and cut out the appropriate pieces. Alternatively, you could just buy pre-made cards, but I couldn't find the colour I wanted. Just a reminder, if you check on the Australia Post website, they will tell you which sizes are preferred...and I think you can get cheaper postage (might pay to check with your local friendly AustPost peeps!!).

Step 3 - Measure a rectangle (or square if that is your shape) a bit smaller than the front of the card, and cut an appropriate number out of the printed paper. Trim with the scalloped scissors as shown in the photo. I have found - via trial and error - that it is best not to snip all the way to the end of the scissors, as they tend to have a little flat bit which will result in some odd shaped scallops. Attach to the front of the card in a centred position, top and bottom. Step 4 - Measure another rectangle (or again with the square) out of the contrasting card which is slightly smaller again than the base card. Trim with the scalloped scissors again and attach in a centred position to the patterned paper you have already stuck down.
Everyone still with me?

Step 5 - Measure yet another rectangle, this time out of the cream card. This will need to be slightly smaller again than the last rectangle you cut. This will be the card onto which you will stamp your images. I find it easier to measure all of these rectangles out, but to NOT cut them out until the stamping is finished. This way I don't have to fiddle with the card too much when stamping and masking.

Step 6 - Grab your stamps and ink and scrap paper. Stamp your main image onto the scrap paper and allow the ink to dry. Once this is dry, trim the image as close to the edges as possible. This is to create a mask for the next couple of steps. Your mask doesn't have to be too detailed. For example, I have not gone into the tiny details of the mistletoe sprig, but it still gives the effect I am after. Obviously, the two other rectangular stamps were far easier!! Step 7 - stamp your chosen images into the rectangles you have drawn on your cream card. I also printed my greeting onto unused card on the edge. Step 8 - Grab the mask you have made earlier. Place this as closely over the stamped image as possible. It is advisable to wait until the freshly stamped image is dry before you do this, otherwise you risk smudges! Stamp your music (or text - whatever) stamp over the top of the masked image.
Step 9 - Once the stamping is dry, using watercolour pencils or markers, colour the image as applicable. The photo illustrates my mistletoe card which had quite a bit of colour, but the other two images I had did not have as much colour. If you use water colour pencils, be careful that the stamped image does not run too much. I used pencils, and as the ink is not heat set it tended to run a little as you are dabbing it with water. Step 10 - Once the images are completely dry, cut the rectangles out and trim with the scallop scissors. Also trim your greeting. I have stamped my music image over my greeting without using a mask. Step 11 - Now the messy bit. Using a small piece of sponge, apply ink to the edges of the cream coloured card to make it look 'aged'.

Step 12 - At this point, you could use a punch and attach eyelets. I started to do this, but was having eyelet issues, so only made one card like this. If you do use eyelets, you can thread ribbon or embroidery thread or similar through them. Otherwise, skip this step.
Step 13 - Attach your stamped images to the front of your card!! And voila! you are done.

I made six of these for a Christmas card swap that I joined, and I think they turned out rather lovely (if I do say so myself!!!)

Super Stitch-a-long

I am a somewhat experienced stitcher-er (altho you would not belive the dramas I am having trying to type the word!!). I have been cross-stitching for years and years and years after succumbing to my mother's very insistent demands that I learn as a child, having taken out prizes in our local country show (BWAHAHAHAhahahahaha take THAT elderly CWA ladies...). I have also dabbled in hardanger and other embroidery styles with a great deal of success. i'm one of those detail oriented people that counted cross-stitch and the ilk is really easy for.

But now...

Now I have joined Pip's Xmas stitchalong at www.meetmeatmikes.blogspot.com. I think even for the mostly uninitiated this would be an easy-peasy project to do. Pip has very clear and concise, easy to understand instructions (complete with pictures) and is running a wee tutorial every week or so (I think). We are onto the second step already, although the first step was just to gather the materials.

Soooooo.....give it a try peeps!! The results should be quite cute and if you don't have a stocking recipient of your own (or are going to keep it for yerself!) you might have a niece / nephew / neighbourhood child / co-workers offspring to give it to. Or otherwise - maybe a child who is sick in hospital?

Anyhoo, get out there and give it a go!! (Youngish) Stitchers of the world, Unite!!!

That is all :)

(Except for a brief Xmas card tutorial over the next few days. My FIRST EVER tutorial!! Woot!!)

Baby's been a bad, bad blogger...

::sigh::

Sorry about the lack of meaningful posts.

I feel quite bad for my readers (if I actually have any - and if I don't it only serves me right for not posting regularly). The only real excuse at the moment is that life has been a bit crazy busy, what with starting my new job etc, etc, etc.

Just as an indication of how frantic things have been, last week I had two after-work 'presentations' to attend, swimming lessons on Monday, the Foxtel Lap Fundraising Event on Friday morning, cinema Saturday morning to see 'The Women' with my cool aunt for her birthday, Black Tie Ball to attend for work on Saturday evening, Pink Triathlon on Sunday morning, collapse with exhaustion on couch Sunday afternoon and back to swimming again yesterday afternoon.

Eep. No wonder I feel a bit tired and rundown, and my slightly sore throat is not really helping matters.

Well! Enough of the pity party ;)

Here's some proof that I have actually been doing things of a crafty nature (apologies in advance for the photo-heavy post - but hey, I haven't really been posting at all, so if you want it to continue, best you stop ur b!tching!!!)

First cab off the rank is a knitting needle cozy I whipped up about two weekends ago. Have wanted one for yonks but could never find one that wasn't in nanna fabric. Not that I have anything against nanna's, it's just I'm a tad young for that!!

I didn't work from a pattern, just kind of worked out how wide and long it would need to be and then marked out where the seams for the needle pockets had to be, according to the sizes of the needles. I did forget to insert the ribbon tie into the hem before I top-stitched, but I solved that by sewing it onto the front after I lightly quilted around the pattern and it has worked out just fine!!

I also finished my first big swap on Swap-Bot. Theme was 'A to Z Whimsy' swap, and I had to send to a lovely lady in the US, who has four super cute little boys. I didn't get a photo of all the stuff unwrapped, but this one is of the items all parcelled up and ready to go! I made a Fimo xylophone for the letter 'X', had buttons, a handmade pincushion, lollies, stickers, scented erasers and goodness knows what else in there!!!

Next is a selection of fabulous crocheted doilies I got from the OP shop for the princely sum of $4.80. Good lo'!!!! Their fabulousness knows no bounds. I fear I am becoming a trifle obsessed with lacy doilies...altho' this is not necessarily a bad thing!

I think this one is my favourite...

And finally, my fabric binge continues! Best of all is that Spotlight had quilting and craft fabrics on special (end of line apparently) for $8.00 and $3.00 a metre! Insanity. I don't have pics of all of the great fabrics I picked up on special (bwahahahahahaaaaa!!!!!) but trust me when I say that they were awesome!!! I now have far more fabric than one person probably needs :)

The fabric in these photos came from Etsy, all the way from Japan from kimonoreincarnate. And they rawk!!!! I especially love love love the teensy hedgehog peg clip that perfectly matches the fabric!! Loves!!

Even the parcel was cool! No standard sticky tape for the uber-cute Japanese - this masking tape has a cute pattern on it! I am soooooo jealous!

La, la, lalalalalaaaaaaa, dum-de-deeeeeeeee..

That's about as close to me singing as you want to get! Despite my most bestest wishes, I sound like a skinned cat when I sing. I think it is best for everyone if I limit it to quiet little "la-la-la's" :)

  3. Long Day - Matchbox 20

New job...Days 1 and 2

So I started my new job yesterday.

It's.....different ;)

Different because where I was working was a large open plan office, with heaps of other chicks (yeah, that's right CHICKS!!) and lots of interaction between everyone.

My new desk is in a small 'pod' with four cubicles - only three of which are occupied - where we all have our backs to each other.

Instead of open plan, we have 7 foot high walls surrounding us - with an opening at the top, so that you can hear everyone around us...but can't see them.

::sigh::

Any the other occupants are two guys.

::sigh::

It's just not the same.

They don't really get the gossip. The talk about shoes. The talk about clothes. The whining about Mr WKDN. The quirky news articles I like to share with my co-workers. They don't understand my need for my George Clooney and Daniel Craig ::drool:: pictures. There's no sharing of sweet, sugary snacks in the afternoons, nor 3pm smut talk.

I suspect that they would not notice if I had my head shaved.

::sigh::

Oh well. I'll get used to it. I suppose. Eventually.

::sigh::

Wacky iPod Shuffle Wednesdays

So, I have very umm, eclectic music taste. Eclectic would be the polite way to put it!

In the vein of www.noappropriatebehavior.blogspot.com 's devotion to music (I heart how the blog post titles are song lyrics and although I could never pretend to even remember most song lyrics, I tewtelly dig it!!), each Wednesday I will post a selection of 10 random songs that appear on my iPod when it's on shuffle. Obvy, there will be some duplication from time to time, so, because this is MY blog, I will use my discretion to substitute any previously mentioned song for the next song.

Without any further ado (::drumroll::):
  1. Fire Water Burn - Bloodhound Gang
  2. Dirrty - Christina Aguilera
  3. Who the F**k is Alice - Torpedos
  4. You're So Good To Me - The Beach Boys
  5. Rock The Boat - The Hues Corporation
  6. Goodbye (Astrid Goodbye) - Cold Chisel
  7. She's Like The Wind - Patrick Swayze (cringes slightly...)
  8. Head Over Heels - ABBA
  9. Complicated - Avril Levigne
  10. The Rose - Bette Midler

Yeah.

Eclectic.

Busy as a bee ......bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........

Whew!!

::wipes sweat from brow::

I had a HUGE sewing weekend. Started off Saturday with a 70km round trip. Just. To. Get. Some. Yarn.

Yep, seems that the yarn I was using for my afghan blanket is a Lincraft proprietary brand. There is now only one Lincraft store in the Perth metro area. In Whitfords. Which is approximately 30 kilometres from my place.

::Sigh::

So I set out on my intrepid journey, thinking that I would be super sneaky and pop into two other craft / fabric chain stores on my way home. Ones in different suburbs than I would usually go to. Northern suburbs (I'm a SOR - South of the River - gal). So, all is going well. I get what I need from Lincraft, and set out back onto the freeway to Osborne Park / Innaloo (stop yer sniggering...it's pronounced as it looks and it is a real suburb. For the people from the US of A who are unaware, a 'loo' is a bathroom. That's right In-A-Loo...or In-A-Bathroom if that works for you).

Anyhoo, I CANNOT FIND THE STORES I AM LOOKING FOR!!! One appears to have been razed to the ground and is now a construction site, but the other...::poof::... gone. WTF??!?

::rolls eyes::

So after circling the block three times, I throw in the towel and head back SOR to safe and familiar suburbs where I know where the stores are. Success!!

No pics of my spoils as MR WKDN is away visiting his family for a family reunion, and hence has taken 'HIS' camera with him. Pfft.

But, I got my yarn...plus more contrasting yarn...plus a cable needle...plus some fabric for more Sergei's (Sergei's recipients older sister has put in a special request. We'll see what Santa can manage, shall we!!)...plus some letter stamps...plus a zipper...plus the extra fabric for the MIL's bag...plus some cool Moda Sock monkey fabrics...plus a couple of stray fat quarters. That is all ;)

Well, I sewed and sewed and sewed....and then sewed some more! Broke one needle and two nails ::sigh:: oh well, that's what you get.

I made a small bird stuffie as a gift for a work friend (from www.spoolsewing.com), one large and one small bags WITH ZIPPERS!!! (from www.dragoknit.blogspot.com) I should just point out that this is an EXCELLENT tutorial. I only had to refer to it for the first bag I made. For the second I did it from memory. That is how simple and easy to understand the tute is. I finished the MIL's bag. It turned out quite a bit larger than I was imagining, but I am still quite pleased with it (she's only a little lady and she could near on use the bag as a pup tent, but I figure with 7 grandkids and another on the way she's gonna need a big bag!!). No pattern for the bag as I just made it up as I went, but it did have a crewel embroidery panel I did myself a few years ago as the front panel.

Then onto the papercrafts for birthday cards to go with the gifts I'm preparing for the October-birthday-a-thon we are experiencing here.

Plus I knitted about 6 afghan squares. Which, whilst it might not sound like much, I do have RSI so have to take things real careful (it's a bummer when a work inflicted injury takes such a toll on your leisure time...), so 6 whole squares is quite an achievement!!

Wow. That is a LOT of stuff (for me anyway) as well as getting in a short run on Sunday, grocery shopping on Saturday, cleaning, washing, dishes, general household maintenance etc and a swim on Sunday.

I'm exhausted all over again just thinking about it ;)

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

ZOMG! October birthdays = crazitime...

Good lo'....

What the heck is it about birthdays in my & MR WKDN's families in October.

We've got (count 'em) my aunt (1), Mr WKDN's Mum (2), Nephew (3), my niece (4), Mr WKDN's godson (5), my friend (6) and, and, I'm sure there's at least one other one in there...maybe another of Mr WKDN's nieces?

So 7. Approximately.

::wipes sweat from brow::

I am going to be ker-azy busy making stuff for gifts.

I've already sorted a set of fabric coasters for my aunt (which are finished); a tote bag for the MIL (partially finished - I ran out of fabric...); you've met Sergei who will go to the nephew and of course Sadie the monkey and her clothes for my niece.

Hmmmm, who does that leave? My friend; the godson and the remaining niece. And to finish the tote bag. Eeeep.

::wanders off muttering about cold autumn nights spawning springtime babies...::

We'll always be together....together in Electric Dreams...

Woot!!!

You may have noticed the change to the general decor of the blog. I am VERY PROUD to announce that whilst I was sick I actually managed to insert some HTML (I'd like to thank the very lovely www.leniandrose.blogspot.com for some pointers) and I even had to fix some of the HTML I inserted (thanks Google...). I rawk!!!

Considering that I am only mildly computer nerdy (and damn proud of it!), and most of my nerdiness has to do with Excel, I am pumped that I managed to do all of this without bringing the world to a crashing halt :)

Oh. And I got a new job. Still with the same company I have been with for the last 12 or 13 years (I forget exactly which. All the days merge into one, so it feels like about a thousand years), and still on the same pay (bah!) but much better for my career! Finally, after 14 unsuccessful applications over the course of the last 12 months someone LOVES ME!!! And not only does someone love me ...THREE someones love my work, as I actually already had another, different, top-secret job which I then had to (politely) kick to the kerb to take up this other new job PLUS I was also approached for a THIRD position. Phew! It never rains but it pours I tells ya!! (QUite frankly, after the masses of rejection, hell, I needed the damn ego boost!!!)

Day 4...welcome Kylie back to the land of the living!

Well, I still feel a bit shitty, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy better than I have for the last three days.
It appears that I may live after all ;0)
This cold would have KILLED a man, I tells ya!
Sadly, in my extremely weakened and undernourished state (have subsisted on nothing but Orange Juice - WHICH I DONT EVEN FRICKING LIKE - since Friday...so have handily lost one and a half kilos) have been almost incapable of crafting ::frowns:: which is irritating as I had such productive plans for the weekend ::whining::
I did manage to finish one Feather and Fan Dishcloth in Cleckheaton Natural Cotton Yarn. Although I now have a rash on both my hands that I suspect may be an allergy to either the yarn or pesticides used to grow the cotton? Either that or I am allergic to some of the meds I have been taking, but the allergic rash is only manifesting itself in the skin of my hands...
::hmmm::
Dishcloth turned out quite cute. Is blocking up nicely at the moment. Started another using a bamboo/cotton yarn, but I am not sure how successful this will be as the yarn is quite thick. Time will tell.
Also finished one swap and posted off my parcels to 4 partners for another postcard swap I entered into. I feel a bit bad as they were supposed to be sent out on Saturday, but (a) I was hardly compos mentis on Saturday. In my weakened state I was crying because I could not get the cap off my OJ... and (b) my post office does not open on Saturdays... Anyhoo, I posted them all out today and put a little note in explaining my tardiness, so hopefully noone will hold it against me too much :/

In the absence / void / dearth of other completed crafts, heres some pics of a little fella I finished a couple of weeks ago....
Introducing ........
::drumroll::
Sergei the Soviet Kosmonaut
Here he is peeking over the strange and unusual foliage of my broccoli plants...

And below, he's besporting himself in one of my indoor plants...

And finally, scaling the giddy heights of the sweet pea stakes...

(I secretly think Sergei prefers the sweet pea flowers to the other locations. After all, they do show off the redness of his delightful space suit).

Of course, the cat just cannot believe anything that the others get up to...

If it had eyes, they would be rolling at the others behaviour...

Days 2 & 3 of the cold from hell...(and introducing someone special)

::hack-hack-hacking cough::

Hmm. Nice.

Tewtelly over being sick. Need a new pair of lungs :(

And *sob* I'm home by myself at the moment, so IDONTEVENHAVEANYONEHERETOTAKECAREOFMEEEEEEEEE....

::sigh::

Altho', I am feeling a leetle better today. A little. Not much. But a bit.

So to celebrate my (hopefully) impending return to health, let me introduce you to Miss Sadie (drumroll please!)
As you can see, Miss Sadie is a cheeky little monkey who enjoys a (non-alcoholic, of course) Banana Daiquiri. She especially enjoys the cocktail umbrellas that come with these drinks.

Here she is, by my lucky bamboo, imagining that she is in some wonderful tropical location (rather than on top of some tupperware in my kitchen...)

Miss Sadie is wearing delightful mini apron (to match her future owners apron) and a cute, hot-pink woollen cardigan. Some other clothes and accessories are currently in the pipeline, as at the moment, the entire world can see her monkey butt through the back of her apron. And that just.will.not.do.

I hate...

::sniff::

...being sick

::hacking cough::

I sound like fricking Darth Vader everytime I breathe in. Everytime I breathe in it makes me cough. Coughing makes me cough more. Coughing makes my chest hurt.

::cough::

Every joint and all the bits of skin on my body HURT.

::sniffle::

I hate it when germy people come to work and 'soldier' through their day, being all, "Oh, I'm soooo sick, but I'm still here". Fricking martyrdom would be too good for the germy little bastards.

::hacking cough::

Being sick makes me v. grumpy (did you notice?)

::sniff::

Day 1 in the anatomy of a cold :(

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Who's this cheeky monkey then?

Yep. That's right. It's completely out of control here at the WKDN household. Softies are taking pictures of their own butts. Thats right. Their. Own Butts.
Digraceful and out of control. Lucky for the world I haven't managed to procreate. Imagine the damage my actual children could wreak...
More info on this little troublemaker coming soon...

Photo-rama-rama

Photo-rama-rama..dum dee dee dee dum, lalalala rama-rama-ramaaaaahahahahaaaaa.

::coughs::

Sweet embroided table cloth I found in the local Sammies. Picked it up thinking that the corners were the only embroidery...must admit I nearly put it back...
Then I saw these...
And this...
And it just got better...
...when I opened it up and there was a beautiful hand embroidered centre panel ;)

Check out those hot damn pineapples! Cherries! Funny shaped green leafy-flower thing!

I heart this table cloth ;)

Eep. The mess that is my craft room... One of my little jobs for this weekend...sorting out that pile of 'stuff'...

Some crafting swag from - of all places - Target.
OMG! Shoes! Check them out! Diamantes! Flowers! Too many exclamation points!!!!
Sweet dresses, handbags and shoes.
Awesome brads, ribbon, buttons etc. Loving the colours.

And then
::blinks::

theres my unholy fabric binge.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but that fabric with the big flowers on on the left of the snap is EYE BLINDINGLY BRIGHT. OMG! I nearly had to go and get me some new retinas after that arrived in the post. I guess I'll find some purpose for it. In very small pieces, I expect ;)

And...

I've got still more fabulous fabric coming from an Etsy seller and yet more (I know, I know, I'm off to Fabrics Anonymous next week. The first step is admitting you have a problem. I dont think I have a problem...) from an eBay store I frequent.

I especially like this fabric with the 50's style children, and the tape measure print. Sorry about craptastic photo - I haven't quite worked out my camera editing functions as yet...

Another of my favourites. Of course - I have no actual purpose for these fabrics as yet....stash-building, oooooh yeaaaaahhhh :)
